Over the Edge Radio

Negativland

Over The Edge Radio Archive (Seeland 031). Negativland's live mix radio show "Over The Edge" has been the longest-running block of free-form audio collage in radio history. With Negativland's Don Joyce at the helm, the weekly show was broadcast from KPFA FM in Berkeley California from 1981 to 2015. His death on July 22, 2015 closed a very large and long chapter in the group's history.

Here is how Don and Negativland described Over The Edge in texts drawn from over three decades of promoting the show:

"OTE's weekly themed mixes are made live and spontaneously on the air from a variety of formats and equipment used to do live sound cut ups and collage while mixing, including the frequent use of the now long dead analog technology of radio broadcast cart machines. On each themed episode of OTE there is a plan and there is no plan. Existing within the parallel universe of the Universal Media Netweb, the OTE mix consists of found sounds of many kinds from many sources put together on the run as the continuous audio collage progresses, along with live electronics (often from our Boopers), live sound processing, and all sorts of reccuring themes, topics and characters. Some of the shows involve all of Negativland, while some involve others outside of our group who participate semi-regularly. Beyond those, there are regular solo show broadcasts by Negativland member Don Joyce, who is the FCC license holder and responsible for filling the radio slot each week. All in all, if you like Negativland, you will like these shows, no matter who is involved, as they all maintain a "Negativ" touch based on our live mixing techniques. OTE often employs “Receptacle Programming,” which means you. Phone callers are punched into our mix with no warning. Call 510-848-4425 to deposit your programming. When your phone stops ringing, you’re on the air. Don’t say 'hello'."

A good overview of Over The Edge, Negativland, and Don Joyce's legacy can be found at this link.

Don's detailed 1995 essay about "Over The Edge."

For an informative bio on Negativland's past, present, and future, try this link.

Besides Negativland's many studio recordings, over the years a small selection of Over The Edge shows have been carefully edited into CD releases, often with elaborate packaging, and can be found here.

For updates on what the group is currently up to try Negativland's Facebook page.

NOTE 1: This archive began in September of 2015 by posting 941 three-to-five-hour-long episodes of Over The Edge from Don’s own personal air checks. That's over 3200 hours of live radio. There are still gaps in this archive to be filled over time (especially the early years. The 2015 shows will go live soon), so please contact Negativland at ote@negativland if you have any shows that we are missing. When you do, put "OTE" in the subject line. Our spam filters are set on high, and anything not having that tag will be junked. We're figuring that spam robots are not yet sophisticated enough to understand this paragraph, so we should be safe for a while.

NOTE 2: Individual show descriptions found here are mostly written by Don, but if a show description is missing and you’d like to contribute one, write it up as a "review" of the episode and let us know that you posted it. We are working on new and better ways to search this archive, and if you have ideas about that, drop us a line. And if you are that person who listens to every single show up here, however many years it takes you, please tell us!

NOTE 3: From 1981 to 1985, Over The Edge was on Sunday nights from 2am to 7pm. From 1985 onwards, the show has been on Thursday nights from midnight until either 3am or 5am, depending on which week of the month it was. The show was never on for the first week of each month, which is why there are never 52 shows in any given year.

NOTE 4: Though Over The Edge and Receptacle Programming continues to exist, evolve, and is still broadcasting each week on KPFA FM, this archive consists of the episodes helmed by Don Joyce. Once we have all of 2015 up, it will end on the episode broadcast immediately after his passing, "There Is No Don."

Over the Edge: Untitled Negativland Live Mix: "An Experiment of Sorts". Originally aired on July 6th, 1981 on KPFA radio. Featuring Negativland. Runtime 01:33:25. These early 80s OTE shows were recorded onto reel-to-reel recording tape. We couldn't afford to buy enough tape to record every show and keep the recordings, so Don would edit out the best bits and use the rest of the tape to record the following weeks show. So that's why all these early shows are partial only. "My...

We couldn't afford to buy enough tape to record every show and keep the recordings, so Don would edit out the best bits and use the rest of the tape to record the following weeks show. So that's why all these early shows are partial only. This is a somewhat tentative sounding show. The early Negativland OTE shows were chaotic and sloppy, extremely fun (we are all blown away by the idea that we were on the radio at all,...

Over the Edge: California Superstation. Originally aired in January of 1983 on KPFA radio. Runtime 3h:23m:44s. The California Super Station was Dick Vaughn's precursor programming to "Moribund Music Of The 70s." This is a combination of two CSS shows from '83 and '84. Although Dick's OTE CDs have all the records edited out, this is how it was done on the air with all the 70s cuts played in their entirety. The radio point here was to "convince" KPFA listeners that the station...

The show's recording is an edited one, keeping just the relative "good parts", and weighs in at only about 90 minutes of a 5 hour show. It's the Big No Idea Night, when the audience is asked by Dr. Norway to deposit an idea or two. Receptacle programming throughout your solar sphere yields a smattering of ideas, including a Chico, CA restaurant's cook and manager bantering with Wang Tool on the graveyard shift. Voicemail from American Atheists, Digital, and other companies grind...

Dick Goodbody hosts a taping of his TV commercial trivia quiz show, "I'm Not Sure", before a "live" audience in the Timberledge Ballroom. Contestants are callers. The rules are excruciatingly elaborate. The Weatherman entertains with one of his first versions of "Happy the Harmonica". Lots of quiz, lots of applause, and a few "behind the scenes" scenes. (Earliest "complete" air check still in existence, though not quite a complete show - this...

This 1986 prototype of what would eventually show itself as "A Piddle Diddle Disneyland" in the 1990s is rough and tumble by comparison, but an incredibly fun time across all three hours. The Universal Media Netweb is having a "family night" at Disneyland from midnight to 3am. Dickie Diamond and Peter Diddle are taking in broadcasts from throughout the park, with contributions by Larry King, Minerva and the Moonbeams, and many different receptacles. Ronald Redball drops...

Over the Edge: Fourth of July. Originally aired July 4th, 1986 on KPFA radio. Runtime 2h:42m:28s. This surviving example from the early days of receptacle programming has patriotic callers of interesting persuasions competing for holiday attention. From the Credibility Gap's Nixon to Jonathan Winters' wealthy industrialist, and that subversive Rock & Roll everywhere. A theatrical...

This is a truncated recording of the first 90 minutes of this show. Over the Edge blows out the vacuum tubes on a non-stop, quick-paced layer cake of sound and voices regarding the all-seeing, all-dominating Television. Commercials, sales pitches, televangelists, and media criticism swirl around the sounds of videogames, media critics and receptacles caught in the middle. A quiz show begins in-studio with many wrong answers to TV trivia, and then the show turns inside out as pre-recorded quiz...

Over the Edge: Star Wars. Originally aired in October of 1986 on KPFA radio. Featuring Don Joyce. Runtime 3h:1m:10s. Technical note: First five minutes of the recording are muffled before moving to a clearer mix. Crosley Bendix hosts this semi-regular painters only call-in show. A variety of virtual and unknown fine art painters get advice from Crosley on the air about their jobs - from concepts to techniques, from style to price, from form to formlessness, with tangents ranging from the ridiculous to the absurdly ridiculous. This show was the germ of the later recurring "All Art Radio" shows. This one is a solid unscreened talk radio format relieved by a mix of visual artists speaking at...

Dickie Diamond hosts a no-loser game for receptacle callers. Contestants punch the category button on their phone, the wheel is spun, and they win whatever it stops on. Categories are limited to ice cream, cars, and dates with rock stars. This innovative but never before tried format ends in technical chaos, and the show launches itself into space. There, we hear many parts of "Electric Life", an early 80s studio piece made mostly out of OTE from that period. The Weatherman and his...

Stories of holes and tunnels through the earth mix with samples of Dune's worms making holes, and a wide variety of songs (Beatles, Zappa, Mindy McCready. Over the Edge: Negativland Time "Good Hello. We are Negativland, and the Subject is Time". The first half of this show is a straight up Negativland live concert in-studio, centering around the idea, themes and culture of Time. It's later than you think. Time to go. Time to kill. Time to bed. Now's the Time. Time's Up. Excerpts from the 1945 CBS Radio show "The Judas Clock" wind up with readings of "Blade Runner" and HG Wells "The Time Machine", and Pink...

The start of this episode, "The UFO Show", appears to be cut off in this recording; it begins in the middle of an interview about alien visitation. It seems to be the first episode of what became the "Another UFO" series. A montage of accusations, reports and declarations dominate this show: conspiracies involving the assassination of Kennedy 10 days after a UFO pronouncement, and Jimmy Carter falling back on his promises to open the world to the UFO truth. The Director of Psychiatric Broadcasting for the Universal Media Netweb, Dr. Oslow Norway, hosts "Doctor Talk", a call-in advice program with Dr. Zigmund Void and Dr. F. H. A group of human specialists give advice on any subject to callers. Naturally, the most popular subject is sex, (nothing else seems to be even a distant second) all mixed up with moaning, Mr. Noisy, How To Speak Hip, Mr. Rogers and other assorted media advisory bites. "The Weatherman got laid" rumor lures some calls from The Weatherman, and all this talking sometimes becomes complicated enough to break up into left and right channel discussion groups.
